The Challenges Students Are Facing

Economics students are navigating major gaps in support, and they’re speaking up about what’s missing. In our 2023–2024 survey, students identified the top issues holding them back from achieving their full career potential:

  • 26% lack access to networking opportunities
  • 25% feel underrepresented and lack mentorship
  • 22% experience career uncertainty or confusion
  • Additional concerns include inadequate interview prep and limited industry exposure

These insights highlight the urgent need for programming that supports connection, guidance, and clarity, especially for underrepresented students.

At the same time, students have clearly expressed what they need to succeed. When asked which areas would most support their career development:

  • 65% skill-building assistance
  • 61% career development guidance
  • 56% career opportunities
  • Other key needs include mentorship, community, and real-world resume/interview preparation

These needs directly shape WomEconomics’ programming—from bootcamps and panels to mentorship and networking experiences.
